My doctor recommended a calcium supplement, but I find that it makes me extremely nauseated. How I can get enough calcium without the nausea?
You are not alone in your difficulty with calcium supplements and nausea. Here are some steps you can take to counteract nausea; try each of the following options one at a time until you find one that works.
1. Take the supplements with meals. (If you’ve already tried this, then try taking them between meals.)
2. Switch to a calcium citrate or citrate/malate combination instead of calcium carbonate.
3. Try calcium supplements alone, without magnesium, vitamin D or anything else.
4. Start taking low doses (250 mg. per pill) instead of the usual 500 mg. or 1000 mg. dosage.
5. Take calcium with a digestive enzyme supplement.
I have had positive results in the past with these measures. Good luck.
