Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal medicine may be even older than acupuncture. Herbs comprise an important treatment method within Oriental Medicine. While many Westerners are accustomed to drugs consisting of a single ingredient to produce a specific effect, in Chinese Medicine, complex highly individualized formulas are composed which consist of six or more ingredients. Typically, these are modified to fit as closely as possible the client’s pattern of imbalance, and typically address more than one aspect of an imbalance. For example, antibiotics may eliminate bacteria but do not improve resistance to being infected.

As with all methods in Oriental Medicine, herbal therapy is used to restore balance in the body and mind through the promotion of the patient’s own healing mechanisms. Herbs are available as teas, granules, tinctures or pills as well as topical preparations. They may be taken on a short term basis for an acute condition or long term for other conditions. Herbal medicine has a unique aspect to it in the use of herbs which are able strengthen many aspect of physical as well as mental functions.
