Hormone Replacement Therapy And Weight Gain

I started on ERT (estrogen replacement therapy) a year ago and have gained 25 lbs. Is there anything herbal that I can take that would help me lose some weight? Also, I quit smoking at the same time. (I’m sure this hasn’t helped either.)

One of the unfortunate side effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is often weight gain. I am guessing that you are taking Premarin and Provera as this is the most common prescription. The first thing I would look to do is change the Provera to natural progesterone in the form of oral micronized progesterone. This needs to be done with the advice of a practitioner who knows about natural progesterone and the required dose.

Secondly, you may also be a good candidate for natural estrogens as well. These natural hormones (they’re not herbal, but rather hormones manufactured from ingredients in plants) are associated with fewer side effects and are biochemically identical to the hormones our own bodies produce.

Don’t forget basic habits essential to weight management; a healthy whole foods diet and daily exercise. Ask your health food store about the benefits of chromium and the herb Garcinia in changing how we metabolize sugars and fats. I would encourage you to avoid ephedra products for weight loss.
